Chapter 222
Ethan Sullivan's fingers tightened on the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white.
"Is this your answer?"
Evelyn Sullivan lowered her lashes, sunlight casting fragmented shadows across her face through the window.
"I'm grateful you saved me. Truly."
Her voice was soft, like a feather brushing against the heart.
"But every time I try to get closer to you, Isabella's shadow appears."
Ethan's breathing hitched.
"That was just an accident."
"An accident?" Evelyn gave a bitter smile. "During the flood in Shili Village, if it hadn't happened, would you have cut the rope and jumped down to save me?"
The air in the car turned icy.
"If Isabella had been there, would you still have chosen me without hesitation?"
Ethan's pupils contracted sharply.
"That's not fair."
"I know." Evelyn lifted her gaze, her eyes glistening. "But I don't have the courage to gamble again."
Her fingertips absently traced the seatbelt.
"Three years was enough for me to face reality."
Ethan suddenly slammed his fist against the steering wheel.
"You won't even give me a chance?"
"It's not about you." Evelyn whispered. "It's me... I can't trust you anymore."
A heavy silence settled between them.
Finally, Ethan's voice turned frigid.
"Get out."
The moment Evelyn stepped out, the black Maybach shot forward like an arrow.
She stood still, watching the car disappear into the distance, a dull ache spreading through her chest.
As she turned away, a tear fell to the ground.
Daniel Sterling stood at the villa entrance, his face alarmingly pale.
"Evelyn!"
He rushed forward and pulled her into a tight embrace, his arms trembling.
"I'm sorry... I'm sorry..."
Warm droplets landed on her neck.
Evelyn froze.
"I'm fine." She gently patted his back. "Don't worry."
Daniel's voice cracked.
"I swear, I won't let you face danger again."
His grip was too tight, making Evelyn cough lightly.
"You should let go now..."
Daniel immediately released her, guilt flooding his eyes.
"Let me take you inside."
"No need." Evelyn shook her head. "You should rest too."
Watching him leave, she leaned against the door and exhaled deeply.
