Chapter 80

Guilt crashed over Evelyn like a tidal wave. Her fists clenched. Scorpion's target was her. Even without the accident near the civil affairs office, Ethan would have faced other dangers.

"Grandmother, don't worry. Mr. Sullivan will be fine."

She wouldn't let anything happen to him.

After seeing Mrs. Sullivan off, Evelyn returned to the hospital room door. Before long, Isabella stormed in, her heels clicking sharply against the floor.

"I heard Ethan got into an accident on his way to divorce you?" Isabella's eyes were red, her voice shrill. "Evelyn, you're nothing but a jinx!"

"None of your business," Evelyn sneered. "We're still married. A homewrecker like you has no right to speak."

Isabella trembled with rage. "Just wait until Ethan wakes up—"

"And then what?" Evelyn cut her off. "I haven't even settled the score with you over what happened at the equestrian center. If you keep making a scene here, I won't hesitate to teach you a lesson right now."

"So this is your true face!" Isabella hissed through gritted teeth. "All that meekness was just an act for Ethan, wasn't it?"

"My kindness is reserved for those who deserve it." Evelyn's gaze turned icy. "You don't qualify."

After driving Isabella away, the hallway finally fell silent. Evelyn stared at the hospital door, her heart heavy. If she weren't worried about Scorpion striking again, she would have left long ago.

What troubled her more was Ethan's leg injury. She couldn't let him spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair.

After much hesitation, she dialed a number she hadn't used in three years.

"Brat, you finally remembered this old man?" A familiar grumble came through the line. "Any later, and you could've just offered incense at my grave."

"Master..." Her voice caught.

"This is about that Sullivan boy again, isn't it?" The old man snorted. "Has he treated you well?"

"He has."

"Bullshit!" he snapped. "If he truly cared for you, you'd have brought him to meet me by now!"

Evelyn had no rebuttal.

"Three years ago, I told you to come home if you were unhappy," he fumed. "Instead, you'd rather drive me to an early grave, is that it?"

Her senior brother must have tattled. Evelyn gritted her teeth silently.

"Don't blame your senior brother!" The old man seemed to read her mind. "Next time, come back together—and bring that Ethan Sullivan. I want to see what kind of man has my disciple so bewitched!"

After hanging up, Evelyn kept vigil outside the hospital room for three straight days. Ethan remained unconscious.

At noon on the third day, Sophia's call came through abruptly.
