Chapter 74

Evelyn Sullivan curled her lips in a mocking smile. "Just teaching her a lesson."

She turned to leave, but Ethan Sullivan grabbed her wrist, his voice icy. "Isabella is fragile. If you dare lay a finger on her, the Jacksons won’t let you off easy."

"I haven’t even touched her, and you’re already worried?"

His brows furrowed. "Evelyn, must you twist my words?"

He was only concerned about William and Victoria retaliating against her.

"Whether I’m twisting them or not, you know the truth."

She shook off his grip and walked away without looking back.

Ethan watched her retreating figure, fury simmering in his eyes.

On her way back, Daniel Sterling intercepted her.

"Did Mr. Sullivan give you trouble?" His concern was unmistakable.

A flicker of warmth touched Evelyn’s heart, but her expression remained cold. "Daniel, it’s best if you stay out of other people’s affairs."

His face stiffened. "Actually… Mr. Sullivan’s secretary contacted me. They want to buy your villa."

Her pupils contracted. She’d taken precautions to conceal the property—how had they traced it to Daniel?

"Thanks for the heads-up."

Back in her room, she took a hot shower and collapsed onto the bed. This vacation had been a disaster. She’d rather go home and sleep.

Late at night, the electronic lock beeped, jolting her awake.

A shadowy figure crept toward the bed in the darkness.

Evelyn lunged, aiming straight for the intruder’s throat. The person dodged with startling reflexes.

"Not bad," she muttered, narrowing her eyes.

The lights flicked on.

Recognition ignited her rage. "Ethan Sullivan, you break into my room in the middle of the night?"

She’d file a complaint tomorrow—since when did hotels hand out keycards so freely?

His gaze sharpened. "Since when do you know combat techniques?"

"Takes one to know one," she scoffed. "You’re full of secrets too."

"I’ll find out the truth."

"Be my guest." She shrugged indifferently.

His eyes darkened. "I’ve checked out."

Without another word, he strode into the bathroom. The sound of running water soon followed.

Evelyn clenched the sheets, her knuckles turning white. What the hell was this man playing at?
