Chapter 179
Evelyn Sullivan had only spent a few years with the Jackson family, barely shedding her provincial air. Every time Victoria Farley thought of her adopted daughter, disgust welled up in her heart.
If Evelyn had obediently served the family’s interests, Victoria might have spared her a few kind words. Now? She wished Evelyn would disappear forever.
William Jackson checked his watch for the third time, his frown deepening. Ethan Sullivan was half an hour late with no sign of arrival.
"Isabella, call Mr. Sullivan," William said impatiently.
Isabella Jackson dialed three times, her expression darkening. "Dad, Ethan isn’t answering..."
William immediately called Colin Keller. When the call ended, his face was stormy.
Victoria and Isabella exchanged confused glances.
"The Sullivan Group canceled the deal!" William slammed his phone on the table, barely containing his rage.
"What?!" Victoria shrieked. "Why would they cancel so suddenly?"
William gritted his teeth. "Colin said unless Evelyn personally goes to negotiate with Ethan." His eyes flashed with fury. "That ungrateful wretch must be behind this!"
"That jinx!" Victoria trembled with anger. "Ever since she came back, this family has known no peace!"
William dialed Evelyn’s number and roared into the phone, "Evelyn! What did you do to Ethan?!"
On the other end, Evelyn coldly hung up. Subsequent calls went unanswered.
"Find her! Track her down now!" William barked at his secretary.
At the villa, Evelyn had just finished dinner with Zoe Zade when the doorbell rang abruptly.
The security feed showed William and Victoria, faces twisted with anger. A flicker of irritation crossed Evelyn’s eyes.
The moment the door opened, William swung a slap at her. Evelyn dodged smoothly, her gaze icy. "Leave, or I’ll call the police."
"Call the police?" William laughed bitterly. "Evelyn, are you determined to ruin this family? First, you refused to help, and now you sabotaged our deal. What do you want?!"
Victoria cut in shrilly, "If it’s shares you’re after, using such despicable methods only makes us loathe you more!"
Evelyn studied them as if they were strangers. "Isn’t Isabella so capable? Let her beg Ethan again."
"Why should Isabella clean up your mess?" Victoria snapped. "Apologize to Mr. Sullivan immediately!"
Evelyn suddenly smiled.
"What are you laughing at?!"
"At how ridiculous you are." Her voice was calm. "I’ve done nothing wrong. Why should I apologize?"
Victoria raised her hand to strike, but a slender hand caught her wrist.
Zoe shoved Victoria back. "What kind of rabid dog barks at someone’s doorstep?"
Victoria staggered, shaking with rage. "Evelyn! What lowlife friends have you brought into this house?"
"Shut up!" Evelyn’s gaze sharpened like a blade. "You have no right to judge my friends."
