Chapter 163
Evelyn frowned slightly. "That's just his personality. He's distant with people he's not close to."
Zoe smirked knowingly. "But he's different with you."
Evelyn opened her mouth to explain that it was because she'd helped him during his darkest days, but remembering Daniel might not want those memories dredged up, she swallowed her words.
"You're overthinking it."
The doorbell rang abruptly.
Evelyn hurried to the door and peered through the peephole. Ethan's stern face filled her vision, and her fingers tightened involuntarily.
"What do you want?"
His gaze was heavy. "Why did you sell the villa?"
"It's my property. I can do what I want with it."
"Are you living with Daniel now?"
His accusatory tone ignited her temper. "Since when do you care, Ethan?"
Zoe's voice carried from the living room. "Evelyn, is that Daniel?"
"No!" She quickly pushed Ethan back. "Just a salesman."
Slamming the door, she hissed under her breath, "Leave. Now."
Ethan's lips curled coldly. "Afraid Daniel might see me?"
"Not everyone moves on the day after their divorce by flaunting their new lover in public."
He stepped closer suddenly. "Does it bother you?"
Evelyn stumbled back against the door. "Don't flatter yourself."
"How's work been?"
"What do you actually want?"
His eyes lingered on her face. "Just wanted to see you."
"Seen enough? Then go."
Footsteps approached from inside.
"Evelyn?"
In a panic, she yanked Ethan into the shadows by the wall, positioning herself to block the doorway.
"Coming in a second!"
Zoe pulled the door open, scanning the hallway suspiciously.
"Everything okay?"
"Go take your shower. I'm going for a walk."
Out of the corner of her eye, Evelyn saw Ethan shift. Her heart skipped a beat as she shoved Zoe inside and locked the door.
"Evelyn Sullivan," Zoe's muffled voice came through the wood, "you've got a man stashed out there, don't you?"
