Chapter 146

Evelyn stared at her phone screen for a long time, her fingers tapping lightly on the desk.

"I'll come by after work."

The voice on the other end audibly relaxed. "Okay."

After hanging up, she gazed out the window. The employees at Sullivan Group must be having a hard time lately—when the boss was in a bad mood, the entire company felt the tension.

The moment the clock struck quitting time, Evelyn grabbed her bag and left.

Sullivan Tower was even more impressive than she'd imagined. Standing at the base of the building, she suddenly remembered Ethan's words from their secret marriage days: "Don't come to the company looking for me."

"Ms. Sullivan?"

Colin approached quickly. "Mr. Sullivan is still in a meeting. Should I take you to his office to wait?"

"No need." Evelyn shook her head. "The conference room is fine."

The floor-to-ceiling windows in the conference room offered a panoramic view of the city. She sat on the sofa, watching the sunset slowly sink below the horizon.

"Would you like something to drink?"

"Don't trouble yourself."

After Colin left, the room was so quiet she could hear the clock ticking. At some point, she dozed off, her head resting on the table.

The meeting room door was flung open.

"Where is she?" Ethan's voice was colder than usual.

"In the conference room... asleep."

The sound of wheelchair wheels rolling over carpet was faint. Ethan stopped by the table, his gaze settling on the slight furrow between Evelyn's brows.

"Blanket," he said, holding out a hand.

Colin quickly handed him a wool throw. Ethan moved carefully, but the moment the fabric brushed her shoulder, a pair of drowsy eyes met his.

"Mr. Sullivan?"

Evelyn straightened, the blanket slipping from her shoulders. She blinked, her lashes casting delicate shadows under the light.

"Finished your meeting?"

Ethan averted his eyes. "What did you want to talk about?"

She was fully awake now. Staring directly into his eyes, she said, "Dr. Howard told me you refused treatment."

"My legs. My decision."

"Are you insane?" Her voice rose. "Have you forgotten what happened three years ago? Sullivan Group almost changed hands!"

Ethan's fingers tightened around the armrests of his wheelchair, veins bulging.

"No one can touch Sullivan Group now."

"Then why refuse treatment?!"

"None of your business."

Evelyn shot to her feet. "How is it not my business? We agreed—once your legs were healed, we'd get divorced!"

The air froze.

Ethan suddenly laughed, though his eyes remained icy. "So that's it. You can't wait for me to stand again so you can be rid of me, is that it?"

Evelyn stared at him in disbelief.

"Ethan, have you hit your head recently?"
