Chapter 137
Evelyn Sullivan: "..."
Zoe Zade's words stunned everyone present.
Evelyn felt several probing gazes on her, her fingertips trembling slightly. She took a deep breath, suppressing the urge to punch someone.
Lucas Laurier's eyes widened as his gaze darted between the two women. When Zoe had claimed to be a lesbian earlier, he'd assumed it was just an excuse. But was Evelyn really the one she loved?
"We'll talk about this another time. You should go."
Zoe pouted, reluctantly nodding. "Then don't forget to miss me."
"Hmm."
As Zoe left, Lucas immediately chased after her. He intercepted her in the parking lot just as she was about to get into her car.
"Miss Zade, I'm serious. Give me a chance?"
Zoe was about to refuse when her eyes suddenly gleamed with mischief. "Why did you call Evelyn 'sister-in-law' earlier?"
"Go on a date with me, and I'll tell you."
"Ha. Not interested." Zoe slammed the car door and drove off.
Lucas watched her taillights disappear, a playful smirk curling his lips.
Interesting.
Back in the restaurant, the atmosphere was tense.
Ryan Paisley cleared his throat. "Since Evelyn is here, I won't escort Ethan back."
"Thank you for looking after him, Mr. Paisley." Evelyn nodded politely, her tone distant.
A flicker of disappointment crossed Ryan's eyes before he turned and left.
"How do you know Zoe?" Ethan suddenly asked.
Evelyn frowned. "That's my personal business, Mr. Sullivan."
Ethan's grip on his wheelchair tightened, his knuckles turning white. Ever since she'd brought up divorce, she'd been like a hedgehog, constantly on guard against him.
The ride back to the villa was silent.
No sooner had Evelyn settled Ethan in than the doorbell rang sharply.
She opened the door—only to be met with a stinging slap across the face.
Smack!
Caught off guard, her cheek burned with pain.
Margaret Sullivan raised her hand to strike again. "You wretched girl! Look what you've done to my son!"
Evelyn stepped back quickly. "Please control yourself."
"Control myself?" Margaret hissed through clenched teeth. "Ethan ended up like this because of your divorce! How dare you still show your face here!"
When she'd received Isabella's call yesterday, she'd nearly fainted. This jinx should never have been allowed into their home!
"Mother." Ethan's icy voice cut through the air from behind them. "Who gave you permission to lay a hand on what's mine?"
