Chapter 56

Nathan Evans's finger froze on the screen. Evelyn Langley's words "clean break" cut through him like a blade, severing all hope. If she wanted to start over, why should he cling to the past?

"Come here."

Chloe Valentine huddled under her blankets, nearly gasping when the message appeared. She checked it three times before believing Nathan had actually texted her.

She'd dropped countless hints—even paraded around in lingerie—but he'd never reacted. Tonight's summons felt like a miracle.

"Going out this late?" a roommate mumbled sleepily.

Chloe's fingers trembled as she fastened her lace bra. "He wants me."

"Who else could make our campus belle run out at midnight?" another teased.

Her cheeks burned. Nathan had never even held her hand, making her fear their relationship would crumble. After tonight, everything would change.

The taxi stopped at the villa. The gates swung open before she could knock. A strong hand yanked her inside.

Nathan pinned her against the wall, his kiss rough and desperate. Chloe fumbled to respond, her heart pounding wildly.

He lifted her effortlessly and tossed her onto the sofa. His scorching hands made quick work of her buttons. She melted under his touch.

When he tugged at her bra strap, he suddenly stilled.

"Nathan?" Chloe blinked up at him.

He jerked away, flinging her jacket at her. "Get up."

Ice flooded her veins. "Did I do something wrong?"

She reached for him, but he seized her wrist. His glare turned arctic. "Don't make me repeat myself."

The chauffeur found her still shaking. One last glance at Nathan's silhouette by the window—even his posture radiated distance.

A cigarette glowed in the dark as Nathan called Julian Roscente. "Find me a clean woman."

"You're insane," Julian pushed away his companion. "Does Evelyn know?"

"She doesn't need to." Nathan crushed the cigarette. "Now."
