Chapter 376
"So you're the one who got into grad school at thirty?" Beatrice Merouin finally looked Evelyn Langley up and down, a mocking smile playing on her lips. "You talk a good game. Let's see if your research skills match that mouth of yours."
Shane Evlanch immediately chimed in. "Who even goes to grad school at that age? Either you're mentally challenged or just not bright enough. Have academic standards fallen this low?"
Evelyn remained unfazed. "My IQ is none of your concern. But you—clearly need medical attention."
Liam Kalmien, who had been silent until now, spoke up. "Late-stage rabies. Bites everyone in sight."
He turned to Beatrice. "If it were me, I'd have put down a rabid dog like that long ago. Before it turns on its owner."
A chill ran down Beatrice's spine.
Shane jumped to his feet. "Who are you calling a dog?! Your whole family are dogs!"
Evelyn replied coolly, "The loudest barkers get called out first. Professor, let's go. No point engaging with roadblocks."
Eleanor Roland, who had been trembling with anger, suddenly calmed at these words.
"Agreed."
As the four turned to leave, Beatrice raised her voice. "This year's research funding has been approved. Those who haven't produced decent results in three years should step aside and let real talent take the resources."
Eleanor paused mid-step.
Beatrice continued, "Academic resources should go to cutting-edge work, not fund outdated has-beens. Don't you agree, Professor Roland?"
Evelyn turned back, her gaze sharp. "Resource allocation isn't your call. Research output will prove who deserves it."
"Well said!" Beatrice clapped sarcastically. "I look forward to seeing your groundbreaking results."
......
On the day of the opening ceremony, Evelyn and her two companions sat with the School of Life Sciences contingent. The dean's long-winded speech was putting everyone to sleep.
A commotion broke out in the back rows.
"Was that Victor Dimucci who just walked by?"
"It has to be him!"
"Isn't he supposed to be busy with lab work? Why would he come to the opening ceremony?"
"He's 'SCI incarnate.' Does whatever he wants."
"What's SCI?"
"You don't know? Victor published three SCI papers as an undergrad. Now he drops major publications every year. Even the dean treats him with respect."
Evelyn frowned slightly. This was already the second time she'd heard Victor's name.
