Chapter 456
The woman's face turned deathly pale.
William Langley and Victoria Langley stomped their feet in frustration—
"Those documents in Evelyn's room contain classified research data for national-level projects! Our Evelyn has always been meticulous. If she says your son took them, she must have proof. You'd better return them immediately!"
The woman squared her shoulders defiantly. "Who does Evelyn Langley think she is? I'm digging in my heels today! Whether my son took them or not, I refuse to hand anything over!"
Evelyn didn't waste time arguing. She dialed 911.
The woman scoffed.
Who was she trying to scare?
Just a few worthless papers—the police wouldn't bother with such nonsense!
Thirty minutes later, four officers filed in.
"We received a report about stolen classified documents. Which one of you is Evelyn Langley?"
The woman immediately plastered on a smile. "Officers, it's just kids fooling around with some scrap paper—"
"I'm the one who called." Evelyn stepped forward, handing over her phone. "This surveillance footage clearly shows the theft."
She retrieved her credentials from her bag. "I'm a researcher at Harvard University's National Key Laboratory. The stolen materials contain raw data from a gene-editing experiment involving national security."
She bowed deeply. "Please recover the documents at all costs!"
The officers' expressions darkened instantly.
Harvard's National Key Laboratory!
Gene-editing!
This was no trivial matter.
"Rest assured, Dr. Langley. We'll form a task force immediately!"
The woman gaped in shock.
How did worthless papers suddenly become state secrets?
Her legs trembled, but she stubbornly refused to back down.
The elderly Margaret Roland, silent until now, suddenly lunged forward and slapped her grandson across the face with full force.
SMACK!
