Chapter 494
At an age meant for peaceful retirement, yet forced to cross oceans.
Ethan's heart stirred faintly, though his expression remained unchanged. "Grandma, let's take a walk in the backyard."
"Yes, yes! Minmin always loved the swing back there..."
As he supported the elderly woman, his phone vibrated abruptly.
The flashing name darkened his eyes instantly. He flipped the phone face down with swift precision.
"Grandma, I need to take this call."
"Go ahead."
Only when he reached the courtyard did he answer. "Mother."
"Why did it take so long?" Isabella's voice carried distinct displeasure. "Where are you?"
"Handling business." His tone stayed even.
"What business? Who are you with?"
Ethan's brow furrowed slightly. "I'm not a child who needs to report my every move."
"Report?" Isabella scoffed. "I'm the one being kept in the dark! Why wasn't I told about your grandparents returning?"
A beat of silence.
"I knew it!" Her voice sharpened abruptly. "You're with them right now, aren't you?"
"..."
"Send me the address. I'm coming over."
His gaze turned icy. "Grandmother needs rest."
"What's that supposed to mean? I'm her daughter!" Her voice turned shrill. "Are you all treating me like some monster?"
For years, her parents had preferred contacting their grandson over speaking with her.
Every call ended hurriedly.
"You know the reason." His voice chilled.
"Say it! I'd love to hear your explanation!"
His jaw tightened.
"I won't argue." One final restraint.
"We're settling this today!" Isabella pressed relentlessly. "I'm your mother!"
"Fine." He drew a steadying breath. "Grandmother still hasn't recovered from what happened. The doctors said she can't handle stress. Why do you think Grandfather brought her back so suddenly?"
Sudden silence on the line.
Ethan ended the call and returned inside.
"Ethan, who was it?"
"Work matters. All handled now."
"That's good."
