Chapter 483

The lab alarm shrieked piercingly.

Evelyn's head snapped up toward the display screen.

Red countdown numbers flashed rapidly.

"System shutdown in 60 seconds," announced the mechanical female voice coldly.

Her fingers flew across the keyboard.

Lines of code cascaded down the monitor.

"Just three more minutes," she shouted into the comm.

Nathan's deep voice crackled through the device. "We're out of time."

The lab lights began flickering.

Backup power was draining fast.

Evelyn bit her lower lip.

She typed one final command.

The screen plunged into darkness.

"Damn it!" Her fist slammed against the console.

Nathan appeared in the doorway.

A black briefcase gripped in his hand.

"We need to leave." His voice was taut.

Evelyn glared at the unresponsive equipment.

"The data transfer wasn't complete."

Nathan strode forward.

His fingers closed around her wrist.

"Now or never."

Boots pounded down the hallway.

Evelyn's pupils contracted.

"They're here."

Nathan yanked her toward the emergency exit.

Glass shattered behind them.

A bullet grazed her hair.

Nathan spun and fired.

A scream echoed down the corridor.

They dove into the elevator.

Nathan jammed the basement button.

As the doors slid shut, Evelyn saw the dark muzzles of assault rifles.

"Bang!"

The elevator shuddered violently.

Nathan shielded her with his body.

The car plunged downward.

Evelyn's heart stopped.

"Hold on," Nathan growled in her ear.

Impact came instantly.

The elevator crashed into the ground.
