Chapter 442
Adrian Klein stood at the bathroom door, his white T-shirt soaked through and clinging to his skin.
He wiped his face with his hand, droplets glinting like shattered light between his fingers.
The moment he pushed the door open, his entire body froze.
Evelyn Langley stood in the center of the living room, a black spaghetti-strap dress accentuating her slender waist.
She held a T-shirt in her hands, clearly about to change.
Their eyes met.
The air turned to ice.
Adrian's Adam's apple bobbed as he swiftly turned away.
"Sorry."
His voice came out rough.
Evelyn finally snapped out of her daze, fumbling to pull the shirt over her head.
"I—I thought you weren't home..."
The tips of her ears burned crimson.
Adrian kept his back to her, water still dripping from his damp hair.
He'd intended to shower at his own place.
But the repairman was working on the AC unit outside his bathroom.
"Mind if I borrow your hairdryer?"
He fought to keep his tone even.
Evelyn nodded, then remembered he couldn't see her. "It's in that drawer," she blurted, pointing to the TV stand.
Adrian strode over, his retreating figure uncharacteristically flustered.
Evelyn fled to the kitchen like a startled deer.
She yanked open the refrigerator, cool air rushing over her.
Yet the heat in her cheeks refused to fade.
The mirror reflected her flushed face back at her.
"Need help?"
A deep voice spoke suddenly behind her.
Evelyn jumped, nearly dropping her water glass.
Adrian had changed into a dry button-down.
His hair still held traces of moisture, making it look unusually soft.
"I've got it," she stammered.
But he was already rolling up his sleeves, revealing toned forearms.
"Let me."
His gaze lingered on her scarlet-tipped ears.
The kitchen air grew suddenly thin.
