Chapter 298

"Who touched the documents on the low cabinet?"

Nathan Evans' voice was icy.

Chloe Valentine set down her bowl of bird's nest soup, blinking innocently. "I only opened the drawer. Didn't touch anything else."

Nathan held up two files. "Someone swapped the pages."

Chloe feigned surprise. "Only Mrs. Watson and your assistant were in the study yesterday. The assistant wouldn't dare mess with your things, so that leaves..."

Her meaningful gaze drifted toward Margaret Evans.

Margaret's face paled. "Shut up! This is between me and my son!"

Turning to Nathan, she pleaded, "I did go to the study yesterday, but only to retrieve the files you requested. Your assistant waited outside the entire time—I swear on my life."

"Could Mrs. Watson have—"

Mrs. Watson hastily waved her hands. "The young master forbids us from touching anything in the study. I'm always extra careful."

Nathan shook his head. "Yesterday wasn't cleaning day."

Chloe stirred her soup lazily. "I don't even have a key to the study. Seems the only possibility is you, Margaret."

Margaret trembled with rage. "How dare you accuse me? Why would I tamper with my own son's documents?"

Chloe smirked. "Weren't you throwing a tantrum just the other day?"

Nathan examined the files. Though nothing was missing, the critical pages had been rearranged. This petty sabotage was exactly Margaret's style.

"Forget it." Nathan closed the files. "A mistake in these contracts could cost millions. Mother, don't let it happen again."

He turned to leave.

Margaret's eyes reddened. "Nathan! It wasn't me!"

"Business calls. We'll talk later."

Watching her son's retreating back, Margaret choked on unshed tears.

Chloe pushed her bowl away. "Disgusting! Make it again!"

"You don't deserve bird's nest!" Margaret finally exploded. "Holding that unborn child over our heads—I've had enough!"

Chloe sneered. "What? Don't want your precious grandchild now?"

"Any spawn from your womb isn't worth keeping!" Margaret roared. "Have it or don't—I don't care!"

She stormed upstairs, returning ten minutes later with a suitcase.

"Everyone—we're moving back to the estate!"
