Chapter 231
"She's here." Evelyn Langley had just stepped out of the restroom when Eleanor Roland waved at her.
Margaret Evans froze.
Following Eleanor's gaze, she saw a familiar face.
Evelyn Langley!
Chloe Valentine spotted her too.
Today, Evelyn wore light makeup with a beige trench coat and brown suede boots. Her hair was casually pinned up with a hair claw.
She exuded a relaxed, effortless elegance, like a graceful feline.
"Mrs. Roland." Evelyn linked arms with Eleanor. "Have you been waiting long?"
She completely ignored Margaret and Chloe.
Margaret thought of how her son still pined for her, and fury ignited in her chest.
Chloe seized the moment to hand Margaret a teacup. "Auntie, have some water."
Margaret beamed. "Our Chloe is so thoughtful. Unlike some people who lack basic manners."
Eleanor arched a brow. "And this is...?" She glanced at Chloe.
Margaret hesitated.
The baby in Chloe's belly belonged to the Evans family, but she had no legitimate status.
How could she introduce her?
If word got out that she'd been shopping with her son's mistress, how could she ever face her social circle again?
Chloe watched her expectantly.
What she cared about most was recognition.
After spending so much today to please Margaret, surely she deserved some acknowledgment?
"The child of a friend," Margaret said with a strained smile.
Chloe's smile stiffened.
Eleanor let out a knowing "Oh." "I thought she might be the future Mrs. Evans."
"Nathan isn't seeing anyone," Margaret quickly denied.
Eleanor turned to Evelyn. "Help me pick out some outfits?"
"Of course." Evelyn moved to browse the racks with practiced ease.
Eleanor sighed pointedly. "Someone will be lucky to marry a girl like Evelyn."
Her eyes flicked to Chloe. "Young women should have self-respect. An unplanned pregnancy tarnishes even the prettiest face."
Margaret's expression darkened.
Chloe clenched her fists.
She couldn't match Evelyn's education, and now she didn't even have a title.
A sales associate approached with garments.
Chloe suddenly stepped forward. "Let me take those."
