Chapter 47
Alexander Sterling's expression was grim, but his eyes softened when Evelyn Sinclair approached him.
Evelyn flashed him a tired smile before looping her arm through his. "Is this dreadful event over yet? Can we please leave? I'm absolutely exhausted."
Alexander affectionately tapped her nose. "Of course we can leave. These people don't deserve another moment of your time."
Her eyes crinkled with genuine affection. "You're still the best brother anyone could ask for."
"Do you need to say goodbye to anyone?"
"I made my polite exits hours ago," Alexander replied, smoothing her hair. "The car's waiting outside."
Evelyn nodded, clinging to her brother's arm as they exited the gala. The striking pair - the powerful businessman and his elegant sister - drew admiring glances from everyone they passed.
Just as they reached the entrance, Sebastian Hart hurried after them. "Mr. Sterling! Mind if I catch a ride with you two?"
Evelyn glanced at Alexander, whose face had instantly turned to ice. He was famously protective of his sister. "Actually, I do mind. It's completely out of our way."
Sebastian looked crestfallen. Evelyn gave him an apologetic wave. "See you around, Sebastian."
Knowing better than to push his luck with Alexander Sterling, Sebastian didn't dare insist. He could only watch miserably as the siblings climbed into their luxury vehicle.
Just as the door was about to close, Sebastian suddenly rushed forward in a panic and yanked it back open.
"What on earth—?" Evelyn gasped in surprise.
The commotion drew attention from nearby guests. With Alexander's status, any public scene was bound to become gossip fodder.
Sebastian dropped to one knee, carefully gathering the hem of Evelyn's dress that had gotten caught in the door. He tucked the delicate fabric safely inside the car before looking up at her with a charming grin. "There, now you're all set. Safe travels!"
The crowd murmured at the sight of the handsome young man performing such a chivalrous gesture for the Sterling heiress.
On the second-floor balcony overlooking the entrance, Tristan Whitmore nudged Nathan Blackwood with an amused smirk. "Looks like your wife's little admirer has quite the flair for dramatic gestures, doesn't he?"
Tristan clearly suspected there was more than friendship between Alexander and Evelyn.
Nathan's expression remained unreadable as he turned away from the scene. "Let's go find the others. I need a drink."
