Chapter 287

Evelyn Sinclair's long lashes cast shadows on her cheeks as she absently stroked Leo's metallic fur. The AI tiger purred softly in her lap, its glowing amber eyes half-lidded with contentment.

Nathan Blackwood stood frozen before her, his broad shoulders tense beneath his tailored suit. Even as Evelyn's body language screamed dismissal, he couldn't bring himself to walk away. Not yet. Not when there was still so much left unsaid between them.

"Do you really think I'd give up that easily?" Nathan's voice cracked with emotion as he forced a humorless smile. His fingers trembled slightly as he reached into his breast pocket, retrieving a worn photograph he'd studied a thousand times before.

The edges were frayed from constant handling. Evelyn had saved his life all those years ago, yet never once mentioned it during their ill-fated marriage. Nathan refused to believe she could simply erase those feelings.

"That night in Montecito," he rasped, holding out the photo with shaking hands. "You never told me it was you."

Had he known the mysterious woman who'd pulled him from that burning building was Evelyn, everything would have been different. Their marriage might have stood a chance.

Evelyn's breath hitched when she glimpsed the image. Her fingers tightened around Leo's frame, the only outward sign of her distress. When she finally met Nathan's gaze, the raw guilt and regret in his stormy eyes told her everything she needed to know.

Ice flooded her veins. "So this is about debt?" Her lips pressed into a thin line as she deliberately looked away. "That woman isn't me."

The European terrorist attack, the underground fight rings - those memories belonged to another lifetime. One she'd buried long ago. Meeting Nathan had been both a blessing and her greatest regret.

Nathan recoiled as if struck. "That's impossible," he growled, the photo crumpling in his fist. The pain in his chest was physical, stealing his breath. Why would she deny it? Unless...

A cold laugh slipped past Evelyn's lips. "You're mistaken, Mr. Blackwood. We'd never met before our arranged marriage." She wouldn't let him reduce their painful history to some twisted sense of obligation. Not when she'd finally reclaimed her dignity.

Nathan watched helplessly as the warmth drained from Evelyn's sapphire eyes, replaced by glacial indifference. The realization hit him like a freight train - she wasn't just rejecting him, she was erasing their entire shared past.

"Fine," he whispered hoarsely, carefully smoothing the photograph before tucking it away. His large hands, usually so steady, trembled as they enveloped hers. "It doesn't matter if you deny it now. I meant what I said, Evelyn. I want us to try again."

Evelyn recoiled, but Nathan held fast. When she finally stilled, her gaze was terrifyingly calm. "Do you remember how much you despised me when I begged for your attention?" A cruel smile touched her lips. "Now you understand how pathetic wishful thinking can be."

The verbal blow landed with devastating precision. Nathan's entire body locked up, his carefully constructed composure shattering. The roles had reversed completely, and the irony tasted like ashes in his mouth.

Before he could respond, Evelyn called out sharply, "Lucas?"

The door flew open instantly. Lucas Sterling stood framed in the doorway, his protective stance making it clear he'd been waiting for this moment. His icy glare promised violence if Nathan overstepped again.

Evelyn smiled sweetly up at her brother. "Mr. Blackwood was just leaving." Her fingers never stopped moving through Leo's fur, the picture of relaxed indifference.

Nathan's jaw clenched. He'd never seen Evelyn like this - not angry, not heartbroken, just...done. The finality in her eyes terrified him more than any outburst ever could.

"Get out," Lucas snapped, stepping between them. His hatred was palpable. Anyone who hurt his sister was dead to him.

Evelyn had already turned away, her attention fixed on the cityscape beyond the windows. Nathan's throat worked as he fought for words that wouldn't come. In the end, all he could manage was a broken, "Rest well."

He paused at the threshold, shoulders hunched beneath an invisible weight. "My feelings won't change," he said quietly. "Maybe you can't believe that yet...but I'll spend the rest of my life proving it."

The door clicked shut behind him with awful finality.

Lucas immediately rounded on his sister. "What the hell was that about?" His protective instincts were on high alert, ready to hunt Nathan down if necessary.

But Evelyn just shook her head, her fingers tightening around Leo's frame as she stared at the spot where Nathan had stood. The photograph might have been tucked away, but its ghost still lingered between them - a reminder of everything they'd lost, and everything that could never be.
