Chapter 350
Lawrence Whitmore's lips curled into a smirk, his eyes gleaming with reckless confidence.
"Perfect! It's settled then." The meeting concluded abruptly. As the room emptied, only Evelyn Sinclair and Alexander Sterling remained.
Alexander rubbed his temples in frustration. "I never intended for you to make that wager with him!"
Evelyn arched an eyebrow. "We're past that point now, aren't we? Besides, you're the one who dragged me into this mess." Her voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper. "His son's a complete disgrace - we can't possibly rely on him just because of some bet."
"I involved you because I genuinely need your expertise on this project." Evelyn's lips curved into a knowing smile, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Tell me, why do you despise Lawrence Whitmore's son so much?"
Alexander's expression darkened. "That spoiled brat seduced one of our junior executives and caused a massive scandal. Our company nearly trended for all the wrong reasons because of him." He clenched his fists. "Do you have any idea how much damage control that cost me? And the idiot still doesn't understand what he did wrong - now he's harassing someone in our finance department."
"Lawrence kept covering for him, making everything worse." Evelyn's smile vanished. "So he's that kind of scumbag? Serves him right then."
Evelyn studied Bennett intently. "Do we have the Wall Street investor's profile?" Bennett nodded and handed her a file.
Her smile froze when she opened it. "This is blank!" Alexander coughed awkwardly and made a hasty exit. "We've hit a dead end."
"Probably using a pseudonym too," Bennett added. "You'll need to dig deeper." Evelyn groaned internally.
Did I just walk into a trap? Bennett chuckled beside her. "Just say the word if you need backup, Ms. Sinclair." Evelyn fixed him with a piercing gaze.
"Why is Lawrence so confident about securing this project? He's betting everything on it." She tapped the empty file. "There must be something we're missing."
Bennett shook his head helplessly. "No leads yet. I'll investigate immediately." Evelyn's curiosity burned. Who is this mystery player?
Her phone buzzed - Adrian Blackwood calling. "What's up, Addy?"
"Nikki, we're celebrating at the Phantom Lounge tonight. You in?" Just as Evelyn was about to accept, a thought struck her - Nathan Blackwood would likely attend as the main sponsor.
Adrian sensed her hesitation. "Relax, Uncle Nathan won't be there. He's throwing Gregory Thornton a bachelor party - apparently the girl's pregnant and they're having a shotgun wedding!" His laughter echoed through the phone.
Evelyn couldn't help but chuckle. "Count me in!" Hanging up, she immediately dialed Isabella Montgomery. "Did your mother finally give up on that arranged marriage with Gregory?"
Isabella snorted. "He's beneath me! Ever since you helped me get those photos, Mother's been reconsidering. Now the Thorntons have their own drama to deal with."
Evelyn grinned. "I heard he fell for some penniless girl and disgraced his family. Who knows what's true?"
Isabella exhaled in relief. "Divine intervention! No wonder they've been so secretive. Now I can finally breathe." Her voice turned playful. "Actually, I've met someone... but I'll tell you later. Mother's checking on me!" The line went dead.
Evelyn laughed as she prepared for the evening. The project could wait until Bennett uncovered Lawrence's secret advantage. For now, she had a celebration to attend.
