Chapter 297

Evelyn didn't make it out of the car.

She remained seated, casting a sideways glance at Nathan. Her icy stare matched the chill of the night air.

Remarry him? Over her dead body! The mere suggestion made Evelyn's blood boil, even as a joke.

Nathan's dark eyes seemed to absorb the surrounding darkness.

"Why did you lie about saving me?" he thought. "The woman in that photo is unmistakably you. Why won't you admit it?"

When Nathan confirmed Evelyn's identity, conflicting emotions surged through him - frustration mixed with unexpected joy.

Evelyn laughed coldly. "So what if it was me? What difference does it make now?" Her words left him speechless.

Indeed, what could he do? Nathan's expression froze, his lips pressed into a tight line.

The usually composed businessman seemed on the verge of unraveling. Evelyn noticed with quiet satisfaction.

Her crimson lips parted. "Mr. Blackwood, can't you see? I lied because I want nothing more to do with you. That chapter is closed, and I never look back."

"Not just remarriage - I don't reconcile with anyone I've cut ties with. Move on, Nathan. We're free to marry whomever we choose. When you do, expect an extravagant gift from me."

Her smile didn't reach her eyes. Each word pierced Nathan's heart like shards of glass.

The pain left him breathless. How could she dismiss their shared history so easily? She spoke as if erasing years in a single sentence.

Evelyn reached for the door handle.

Nathan's voice stopped her, surprisingly gentle. "Evelyn, I saved your life once. Can you at least acknowledge that?"

She froze.

Half-turned, she saw the bitter twist of his lips. "Fine, no more talk of remarriage. But must you avoid me like the plague? If it's truly in the past, can't we be... friends?" He forced out the last word through clenched teeth.

Evelyn studied his face. If he could drop the romantic nonsense, she'd tolerate his presence. "Fine."

She settled back into the seat, staring resolutely ahead.

At the cinema, Evelyn's evening gown drew immediate attention. She might as well have been a celebrity at a premiere.

Suddenly, a suit jacket draped over her shoulders, shielding her from prying eyes.

"Keep it on unless you want tabloid headlines tomorrow," Nathan murmured. The jacket would help her blend in.

Evelyn's hand hovered near the jacket before dropping. "Let's get tickets then. Which film did you invest in, Mr. Blackwood?" She scanned the listings skeptically.

None were new releases. The liar.

Nathan glanced casually at the board. "Actually, I invested in all of them."

Evelyn's mouth fell open.
