Chapter 461

Nathan didn't even glance at Tristan. His gaze remained fixed on Evelyn with a knowing smile. "What a pleasant surprise, Evelyn."

He gestured to his wheelchair. "Why don't you push me? I'll introduce you to Chairman Ashford."

Evelyn hesitated for only a moment before nodding. The Ashford Group was notoriously selective in their partnerships. Reginald Ashford only worked with close associates, and his influence in Montecito was unparalleled.

Though less known internationally, his control over two major diamond mines made him a force in the industry. A partnership with Ashford could propel Sterling Corporation forward.

Nathan's lips curved.

Theodore "Teddy" Winslow stepped back with an amused sigh. "Mr. Blackwood always has his methods."

Tristan scoffed, his expression darkening. "You're not even here for me." He turned sharply and stormed off.

Teddy shook his head. "Plastic friendships." When Evelyn was involved, everyone else became an afterthought.

Evelyn guided Nathan through the crowd, exchanging polite greetings. Though no one openly stared, curious glances followed them. Nathan scanned the room and spotted Preston Sinclair surrounded by admirers—no chance of escape.

When Preston noticed Nathan, surprise flickered across his face before vanishing.

Nathan smirked, cold amusement in his eyes. Blackwood Enterprises had maintained ties with Ashford Group for years.

Reginald Ashford, a man in his fifties with silver-streaked hair, brightened at the sight of Nathan. "Nathan! It's been too long." He clapped Nathan's shoulder. "I wanted to visit after hearing about your accident, but business kept me tied up."

Evelyn nearly laughed at the older man calling Nathan "brother."

Nathan waved it off. "Nothing serious. Don't trouble yourself."

Reginald's attention shifted to Evelyn. "Ah, Evelyn Sterling. CEO of Sterling Corporation and William Sterling's treasured daughter."

Evelyn offered a polite handshake. "Chairman Ashford."

Reginald exhaled dramatically. "So you're the ex-wife? I've heard stories." His grin was too knowing. "Didn't expect you two to remain so... close after the divorce."

Evelyn's expression remained neutral, but irritation simmered beneath.

Nathan's jaw tightened slightly before he chuckled. "We're on good terms."

"Smart," Reginald said, nodding sagely. "This world is small. Better to keep allies than enemies." His tone carried an unspoken implication that made Evelyn's interest in collaboration wane.

Then Reginald beckoned someone over. "Victoria! Come here."

A young woman in an extravagant gown hurried forward. Her delicate features contrasted sharply with her opulent attire—clearly wealthy, but not tastelessly so.

"This is Nathan Blackwood," Reginald announced proudly. "The man I've told you about. Brilliant, accomplished. Didn't you always want to meet him?"

He shot his youngest daughter a pointed look.

Victoria Ashford lowered her lashes, cheeks pink, and dipped into a slight bow. "Mr. Blackwood."

Evelyn's gaze sharpened. Now she understood Reginald's earlier comments.

He was auditioning his daughter for the role of the next Mrs. Blackwood.

Nathan acknowledged her with a detached nod, his attention already elsewhere.
